Meal Planning

Meal Planning Basics for Beginners

A simple starting framework for planning meals ahead, without needing to overhaul your whole week at once.

Meal planning simply means deciding what you’ll eat ahead of time, rather than figuring it out meal by meal. It can reduce last-minute takeout, cut down on food waste, and make grocery shopping faster — but it doesn’t need to be elaborate to be useful.

Start small

You don’t need to plan all 21 meals in a week right away. Many people start by planning just dinners, or just a few days at a time, and build the habit from there.

A simple planning framework

  • Pick 3-5 dinners for the week based on what you already know how to cook.
  • Check what’s already in your fridge and pantry before writing a shopping list.
  • Choose at least one meal that reuses ingredients from another (e.g. the same vegetables or grain).
  • Leave one or two nights unplanned for leftovers or flexibility.

Making it stick

Plans that are too rigid tend to fall apart the first time something changes. Building in some flexibility — a backup easy meal, or accepting that plans shift — tends to work better long-term than an overly detailed schedule.
